Braces Suck

I wore braces for two years of Middle School. Most of the people I know have braces, already had them, or are gonna have to get them in High School. Some for two years, some for much longer. Every time I went in to get my braces tightened I came out of the building with some interesting new accessory added to my teeth. Maybe a chain, maybe a rubber band, maybe just a thicker wire. No matter what it was, it hurt. It was annoying, and it hurt.

For two years I went around with big clunky metal glued onto my teeth. And now, even when I got that off, I still have a retainer that I have to wear all the time for the next 6 months, and a metal wire in the back of mouth that they want me to keep there for the rest of my life!

Braces suck. And so now, I have to wonder what's the point? I think people set such strange standards and norms sometimes. Some people are born with straight teeth, some are born with crooked ones. Who cares? Of all the things to spend time and money on. All the things to go through pain and work for. Is teeth really one of them?

If nobody had to get braces, then crooked teeth would just be normal. Maybe people with straight teeth would have to get braces to make their teeth crooked so they could have normal teeth just like everyone else.

I guess that's not gonna happen. Still, now that I have my braces off, and my little metal wire in, and nice pretty teeth, I have trouble thinking that it was all worth it. In hind sight, I think I would have been much happier without all this work, and without my pretty little teeth. But hey, that's just Dustin's View.

  1. Great website or blog or whatever. How'd you do it?

I have never had braces, but suspect they would have done the same to me as they did to you if they had a chance. I've been asking the same questions for years. And many other ones as well from my chirpractic perspective. Can they benefit the spine and structure? Can they stress and damage the spine and overall structure?

  3. I agree with u Dusty but I think uve forgotten how bad ur teeth looked in the begining. I felt the same way when my teeth were done but when i looked back at pictures i saw a major improvment, we have them so long we forget wat we looked like without them. and i like ur idea about everyone having bad teeth. that makes me happy (but do u rlly want to look at all that ugliness all the time, everyone with Bitch Cracker teeth. let me know if u dont remember who bitch cracker is. i cant say the name). but perement stuff sucks. period. braces u get off eventually tho, and the pain only lasts for a day. And Dusty, if youre gonna be on the cover of Rolling Stone, do u rlly want crocked teeth for the whole world to see? But thats Just Hannahs View. HANNY LOVES U!

  4. So Hannah, what you're saying is that if we didn't have braces, and everyone had crooked teeth, everyone would be ugly. But I don't think that's quite true. I think that our society has formed expectations and norms. Based on something, maybe magazines or movies, we have come to a conclusion that crooked teeth are bad. It's kind of like how make-up is thought of as pretty in our society, our culture, but maybe someone from a third-world country wouldn't think so. Because make-up hasn't been glorified in their culture. Or crooked teeth.

  5. Ok ok ur right, but you could say that about alot of things. like boob jobs! braces are just a small part of how crooked and stuck up our society is. I get ur point and I agree with u, but look at all the other messed up things our society has standards for.

  6. What is the deffintion of ugly and pretty anyway? How did we come up with these norms in the first place?

  7. I think some things are like Dustin said formed by society but others are naturally considered pretty. Also braces do things other than make your teeth pretty, which mine are. Braces help with eating. If you had teeth growing out of the roof of you mouth which yes is possible, eating would not only be extremely painful it would also be very hard. Also if you had some extreme buck teeth and you fell you would knock out your teeth making eating very hard. So yes I agree the tiny things that they do with braces are pretty pointless but the initial changes I think are necessary.

  8. okay, well that's a good point. I guess I never really thought about braces being for much more than looks. It just makes we wonder how people would manage before braces. Because I think they did all right...

Interesting stuff about what is pretty, and whether that's just societies norms, or if there's actually something in our brains.
